 Genital warts and pregnancy is becoming one of the most researched matters in the medical field. Genital warts during pregnancy can be the most important cause of worry for expectant mothers. There is a little probability of the disease getting transmitted to their newborn babies. There have been cases of neonatal infection due to infected birth canal. Genital wart may not be very common disease but it usually happen to the genital area and it is the kind of disease that need extra care and attention.
Complications during pregnancy
For mother
During pregnancy different troubles may crop up, if the mother is having a past history of HPV or genital warts. Depending on their position, warts can cause harms during childbirth. If genital lumps have extended till birth canal, there will be an obstruction and in turn difficulty in child delivery. The warts might start bleeding, giving rise to added complications.
For child
There have been cases where it has been found that warts have developed in the throat and mouth of an unborn child. HPV usually transmits itself all the way through a contaminated birth canal, to the warm and moist region of the throat and mouth and there it multiplies quickly. However, occurrence of such a case is very rare.
Treatment
There is no treatment (yet devised) of genital warts during pregnancy. But, your obstetrician can guide you on dealing with such a dangerous issue.
Most people have concern when it is seen that genital warts and pregnancy are present in a single mother at the same time. This can be an indication of a disaster to the health of both the mother and the child. Scientists are trying to develop HPV vaccine for pregnant women. With such modernized medical trend, the day might not be that far. |
